What's the difference between hiking, trekking, and backpacking?

When it comes to exploring the great outdoors, there are several terms that are often used interchangeably. "Hiking", "trekking", and "backpacking" are all activities that involve walking through natural landscapes, but which one accurately describes your adventure? Well, that's like asking, "What's the difference between 'happy', 'joyful', and 'merry'?" They're all synonyms, but each has its own connotations. Let's dive into some defintions:

Hiking

Hiking can range from a leisurely stroll through the woods to a more challenging climb up a mountain. "Going for a hike" is typically used to describe a day walk along trails or paths in the wilderness that are well-marked and easy to navigate. That being said, "a multi-day hike", or a "thru-hike" involve carrying large backpacks with enough gear to be self-sufficient for days at a time, and are much more challenging than a walk in the park.

Trekking

Trekking is a more intense form of hiking that typically involves multi-day trips through more remote and rugged terrain. It requires more preparation and planning than hiking, as trekkers often need to carry their own food, water, and camping gear. Trekking routes can be less defined than hiking trails, and may require more advanced navigational skills. In New Zealand, "tramping" also falls into this category.

Backpacking

This is a grey area and the definition can depend on where you live. While some seem to think "backpacking" is the most intense and demanding of the three activities, and involves carrying all of your gear and supplies in a backpack for an extended period of time. Others define "backpacking" as more of a holiday - travelling around different cities and staying in hostels for weeks at a time.

Conclusion

In summary, hiking, trekking, and backpacking are all great ways to enjoy the great outdoors and explore the natural world. But everyone has their own preferences as to how to describe the same adventure - one man's trek is another man's hike. So whatever you choose to call it, grab your gear, lace up your boots, and hit the trails - the great outdoors is waiting for you!
