Are you in search of a cosy and versatile piece of outdoor clothing? Look no further than a fleece jacket! Lightweight and breathable, fleece jackets are perfect for layering in colder weather or wearing on their own during milder temperatures. To help you find the perfect fleece jacket, we've put together some tips to consider.
What is fleece?
Originally named polar fleece when it was developed in 1979, the aim of fleece was to outdo wool. It’s since become a key piece of clothing that will keep you warm and comfortable in the outdoors. Fleece is made from synthetic material named after the natural fleece coat on sheep.
Your typical fleece acts as a midlayer between your base and outer. It’s effective at trapping body heat and sustaining warmth. Fleece is an insulating fabric made from hydrophobic fibres, meaning it repels water and still insulates while not getting too heavy when wet.

WEIGHT CONSIDERATIONS
When fleece was first manufactured, garments were divided into groups according to their weight. This categorisation is still in use today and fleece continues to be described in grams per square metre (gsm).
Lightweight
Fleece weighing less than 200 gsm falls under the lightweight category, also known as microfleece. Lightweight fleece provides a high level of breathability and makes for an excellent midlayer. It can be worn over a baselayer and under a waterproof shell, making it ideal for mild weather and physical activities that require flexibility.
Midweight
Midweight fleece falls in the middle of the weight range, between 200 and 300 gsm. While it may not be as flexible as microfleece, it can still serve as an outer layer or be paired with a jacket and baselayer to provide warmth on cooler days. Compared to lightweight fleece, midweight fleece is a better insulator.
Heavyweight
Fleece weighing over 300 gsm is classified as heavyweight. It is best suited for very cold weather when physical activity is limited. Heavyweight fleece provides exceptional warmth, making it ideal for activities that involve relaxation and minimal movement.
Should a fleece be tight or loose fitted?
The fit of a fleece ultimately comes down to personal preference. However, since fleeces are typically used as a midlayer option, they should be loose enough to accommodate a thermal or other baselayer underneath, but not so baggy that an outer layer cannot be worn over it. A looser fit can also provide greater flexibility during physical activities.
