5 travel safety essentials

Whether you’re a first-time traveller or a frequent flyer, it never hurts to play it safe when travelling abroad. Here are our travel essentials that will help keep you and your belongings safe on your next adventure.

1. TSA LOCKS

A lightweight, tough and TSA-friendly lock is the best way to ensure your bags cannot be easily opened or tampered with in crowded spaces. They’re also a great idea if you’re staying at a backpacker hostel and need to keep your belongings in a locker.

Combination locks mean you don’t have to worry about losing the key. TSA Lock systems are the officially recognised lock system at international airport security and customs.

2. MOSQUITO-REPELLING ACCESSORIES

Mosquitos are a nuisance at best, and carriers of potentially life-threatening diseases at worst. If you’re travelling to a country with Malaria or Dengue fever outbreaks, for example, it’s really important you minimise the risk of mosquito bites with repellent and by covering up.

3. SANITISER

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention says one of the most important ways to avoid the transmission of diseases is by thoroughly washing your hands with soap and water. Where clean water isn’t available, as is common in many parts of the world, they advise using alcohol-based sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

4. FIRST AID KIT

Never leave home without a first aid kit – it might just save your life. A solid first aid kit will include gauze swabs, antiseptic wipes, adhesive bandages, tweezers, and scissors. Head to your chemist and top it up with pain killers, rehydration salts, anti-diarrhoea tablets, water purification tablets, jet lag tablets, motion sickness medicine, antihistamine, and anti-nausea tablets.

5. TORCH

Whether you’re trying to find your bag in a dark hostel dorm room or there’s a sudden power outage, you just never know when a lightweight, compact torch or headtorch will come in handy. Look for LED, durable and water-resistant travel torches to keep your bases covered, which are also easy to pack.
