It started with the simple act of giving fleece blankets to support their work. Over the years, we've become more deliberate and focused in our approach.
Kathmandu is a proud national loyalty partner of the Australian Red Cross and community partner of the New Zealand Red Cross. We signed an official partnership agreement in 2011 to assist their local and international humanitarian work.
Working to our strengths
We know that when we work to our strengths, we can have even more impact. In addition to financial support, we also provide gear to assist Red Cross workers and volunteers and to help reduce operational costs.
Gear in emergencies
Kathmandu products have assisted Red Cross teams to respond to the 2011 Christchurch Earthquake, 2011 Queensland floods, 2012 Tasmanian bushfires and 2014 New South Wales bushfires, 2014’s Tropical Cyclone Ian in Tonga, the 2015 earthquake in Nepal and the 2016 Tropical Cyclone Winston in Fiji.
Gear for youth
We've provided gear to a group of young people in the Red Cross ReBoot program so that they could take on an eight-day outdoor challenge called Operation Flinders.
ReBoot works with youth who have been through the youth justice system. It aims to reconnect young people with their communities, build up their confidence, and empower them to make a positive contribution.
The Red Cross uses their second-hand clothing store network as an ongoing fundraiser to covers overheads. We were surprised to learn that the New Zealand Red Cross had a shortage of high-quality second-hand clothes to fulfil this need. In 2010, they shipped clothing from Australia to fill stores.
To help, we put our existing infrastructure to work and created Red Cross clothing donation boxes for each of our 164 stores. It's helped the Red Cross, engaged our staff and customers and helps keep your gear out of landfill.
Sharing the dream
Kathmandu team members can also choose to support Red Cross with weekly contributions through the 'Share the Dream' workplace giving program.
